Transporting Currency in 1910

Here we are transporting currency in 1910. Outside the multi-winged building housing the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing at the time, sits a horse and wagon with its guards. (This building is now the home of the Forest Service and is across the street from the Washington Monument.)

Finished currency is being pulled up from the basement vault. Once loaded into the wagon, it will be hauled to the Treasury building, which is a few blocks away in Washington, DC. As you can see, security was kind of light. Although, the guards did carry revolvers.

And, the wagon was not unmarked. Barely visible in the photograph are the words, "Bureau of Engraving and Printing," painted on the side of the wagon. So, everyone knew what was in the wagon.

However, such a wagon was never robbed or even threatened. Things are kind of different now!
